Kodama Shade Track 2 of the Motherland suite - a series of meditative tone poems exploring themes of belonging and identity through my Japanese ancestry and roots. While in Kaga, western Japan for an artist residency during Summer 2019, I visited Kakusenkei Gorge - where some of the Motherland Suite video footage was shot. Kodama Shade was inspired by this magical place. The kodama are folkloric Japanese tree spirits and as I walked through the gorge, there was a palpable presence of ancient otherworldly spirits.
