Literally translated as “red dragonfly”, Akatombo is an old Japanese folk melody as ubiquitous throughout Japan as Happy Birthday is to the the west. My mother would sing me this folk song when I was little and it’s always been a special touchstone to her and my heritage. Reharmonized and reinterpreted and imbued with love for the matriachy.
