About Swimming: This is one of the first songs I made for this record, some three years ago. It benefited so much from Joel Ford’s (who mixed the record) guidance. When I first sent him the original demos he said he could hear slivers of “early 2000s French house music”, even though I was hearing was colder, more modular-based synth sounds. Anyways, that note sent me down a rabbit hole which resulted in the record you’re hearing today, and Swimming is one of the songs that benefitted most from that note. This track is truly meant for a dance floor. I’ve spent a lot of the last few years trying to craft “ambient music that you could dance to”, but this one is about as close as I get to a DJ tool.

This song in particular was orginally slated as a demo for a drum kit that I had plans to release but never got to finish due to time constraints and illness. I still loved the track so I decided to fully flesh it out and work on it to see if it could be placed somewhere. I had plans to but it on my upcoming album but I accumilated too much material to choose from and it ultimately went into the vault until now.

This song gives off an almost ethereal-like feeling. It's meant to put you in a euphoric state and expand your mental whilst listening. I couldn't bare to keep this one hidden from the world so I decided to share it with you all. I appreciate anyone that places a bid on this gem!

this track is off of an EP that never was. we wrote it as a follow up to komorebi, to bridge into the next project. however the sonic direction completely changed in favor of what became "are we?" and so been there before and its companion songs are a unique moment of exploration in our sonic history. looking back, this material informed a lot of what we are currently releasing as we move toward "simple shapes". 

this song serves as a reminder that we are not our feelings, and that when things get tough the emotions surrounding whatever situation don't define us.

This track is dedicated to a long walk I had while visiting my grandparents in Decatur, GA. in 2017, just before graduating college.  I marveled at the different evolving viewpoints I had of the place as I got older, but it didn't change much.  

Ironically, my grandmother passed under a month after the walk, so things truly changed drastically after that. But for the moment that the song describes "Decatur still stayed the same."  I felt warm with the continuity and grounding it gave me while I was dealing with my chaotic college lifestyle back in Austin.

"If summer's ending soon..." (2018) 

The Story Behind "Backstreets": 
So this one kinda came out of nowhere.... We made this in August 2018', it dropped in September and ended up being one of my biggest records to date. I had a car (rip 2013 chevy sonic, u did me well) that was soooooo tinted that I stopped driving on highways and stopped doing night drives. I would drive around Memphis on backroads w/my faithful doggo, Niko and my wonderful gf Jules. Backstreets was randomly (I say randomly because I still have a hard time believing it to this day) the most viral song in America on Spotify for a weekend and was my first record to get on NMF (New Music Friday). It was a really proud moment for me because it helped cement the fact that I could make good pop music that was left of center and that resonated with people. It's a record that got me brought into a lot of conversations that I otherwise wouldn't have been a part of and i'm forever grateful for that.

I'm minting this at 1.09 eth because everything i've minted this year is a reference to Memphis, TN (901 area code, three 6 mafia, etc...) because i'm a firm believer of bringing culture on chain and introducing people to ideas and things that maybe they wouldn't have previously exposed themselves to before. 

Is music still valuable in this market in web3? Let's talk about it. Music NFT prices are at an all time low along with the sentiment, and surely only heading towards that direction even more. Are we as artists supposed to undervalue our work and wait for "a better market"? 

 I still choose to believe that music is valuable, because I know it is. Music is powerful, it helps us navigate through feelings that are hard to put into words. It tells stories. It introduces us to different walks of life and cultures across the country and across the world. It helps us make sense of LIFE, it brings us together. It's wiggly air for our bodies to move to. Can we stop pretending like it isn't valuable because of market conditions? Truth be told, I know this record either won't sell or will take a long time to sell, but i've minted all of my catalog because I believe it's valuable and there's meaningful stories and culture behind them. Now that we've lost the majority of speculators, is there room for music lovers who want to support culture over speculative upside?

A Note From Aly:
This song is a love letter to my girlfriend of 5 years, though we’d been together for less than a year when I wrote it. 

I remember recording Maryam’s verse in my undecorated apartment, my roommates clamoring in the kitchen a room over. I had saved up three years of streaming royalties to buy a used mic and audio interface and was still learning how to use them properly. Looking back, this song represents a turning point in my journey as a self-sufficient artist and creative.

Love’s Like Drumming is important to me for a number of reasons. The first and most superficial is that it’s my first song to hit a million streams — minting it is a way to celebrate that milestone. More importantly, it was one of the first songs that I fully produced, mixed, and mastered myself.

About 'just stay':
just stay is one of the fastest songs I've ever produced & written. It's a direct response to the 2020 lockdown. Its genesis came from both an emotional & practical place. My fiance and I for the first time in a while had an opportunity to spend even more time together 7 days a week as the world shut down. It gave us time we needed to bloom into the next phase of our relationship together. "just stay" is very literally inspired by that notion of us "staying in" but also the sentiment of passion & romance in the purest/rawest form. 

From a practical POV: As an indie artist, the world was shutting down, concert dates I had planned for the fall of 2020 were now in question and studio work was inevitably slowing down. I did probably what any artist would think to do: write my way out of any situation. Just stay was born from the emotion I was feeling and the necessity to hopefully soundtrack feelings of the pandemic with a song that could secure stability in my career at that time. Fortunately the song went on to become successful on streaming platforms, and was essentially the quickest I've ever written and released a song. I wrote, recorded, produced, mixed and distributed the song within about a week or two. 

Just stay also marked my return to mixing my own music, and was an affirming experience exploring that space again as an artist from start to finish. It was also a turning point for me as a mix engineer. I mixed my first album, Portrait in Two (2017) and had largely been doing rough mixes on my work until 2020. I've always mixed, but just stay brought me back on the forefront of the final presentation of my music in a creative way that I had missed. Engineering is something I'm passionate about and spend time studying and learning.

Why release on Catalog:
This song has always been an important part of my catalog; my journey as a songwriter writing catchy songs with pop sensibilities, while remaining in my own creative lane. just stay is one of the first songs I wanted to mint, and now it's one of the last songs in my "legacy" collection, before I released brand new music on Catalog. I hope you enjoy it.

sade has always been a primary influence for us, as we’ve been inspired by constant grooves and smooth sultry production. this song was born of the concept of feeling like you’ve known a person across multiple lifetimes, questioning if the purpose of life is just to connect with the people we are meant to be with.

I think we started this song the same day as Seasons Bloom. We were deep in pandemic mode and John Carroll Kirby and I brought in Jimmy Stack to work with us after our first session. I don’t really even remember how this song began, but that might be because I drank mushroom tea during a massive migraine (it did not improve the migraine). 
	I finished melodies and structure at home and ended up with this demo. I wrote and rewrote lyrics to this song so many times before settling on the final version lyrics because the cadence of my scratch vocal always felt so nice and natural. There also might be cat meows in the vocal take… a priceless easter egg.

My second official release as a solo artist in 2022, "HOTMAIL" is a sexy, romantic and playful "Bay to L.A." situationship-anthem. This one has always been fun to work on to me since I started the original demo in 2019, and carries a lot of personal anecdotes inside of it. It's 808 and synth heavy, it's a lot of crooning but somehow still kinda danceable/rideable, which are all things I definitely prefer in my music.

This thing is produced by combat tools, features my brother DRE?WHO on vocals with me, and has some gorgeous additional production by my other brother Hokage Simon. (both of these blokes are also from the Bay Area like I am...we fasho got something special happening in the Bay)
