After $OVERSTIM happened, my life got a lot more complicated. In a lot of ways things were going well - I was financially comfortable for the first time in my life which was great - but I was creatively stumped. All of my time was going towards $OVERSTIM and it became harder and harder for me to create. For the first time in a while I questioned my love for music.

To get out of my own way, I decided to go to Austin to meet up with some friends to do nothing but write and relax (though admittedly, I spent a bit too much time on Discord).

We made a bunch of ideas during the trip but none of it really stuck. It was nice having a light hearted approach to music for once but in all honesty, I was a bit bummed that I couldn't leave with a demo to listen back to.

On the last night of my stay, I sat down with DLG. to make what I thought would be a quick loop. What started as melody idea at 9PM turned into a race against time to finish the record before my 7AM flight - we were both dancing around the room, pacing back and forth with our shirts off, and matching each other line by line crafting the record. As Dave recorded I kept producing and we somehow managed to get a bounce right before I got to the airport.

That night reminded me why music was and continues to be so important to me and I always listen back to this song when I’m feeling detached from art and creativity.

I recently stumbled upon one of the prettiest views in LA. Nestled in the middle of a neighborhood in the Pacific Palisades, I did a quick hike to get to the top where I could see the entire city from the valley to Santa Monica. Sitting there, I caught myself thinking about how I’m just as happy with where I’m at as I am scared/anxious for where the next few months are leading me. I drove off and turned my existensialism into this song.

Lonely

Since moving to LA I have been super fortunate to work with a bunch of singers, songwriters, and producers that have become some of my closest friends. I’ve always wanted to document various parts of my creative and collaborative process so I decided to create the Phone A Friend Series - where me and some friends get together for a day to hang out and get an idea or two down. As always, we get the whole day captured on a disposable camera. 

For episode one I worked on a tune with my good friend Bloody White. Lucas is a crazy talented producer, singer, and writer and I’ve had the great pleasure to work on music with him for a majority of this year. From sampling his piano to adding unnecessary amounts of distortion on synths, this was a super fun beat to work on.

I was visiting a friend of mine to work on some music and to add to the eerie vibe of the town I found myself skipping through some pages of George Orwell’s 1984. I went down the reading rabbit hole and got to work.

Welcome to installment number four of the Drifter Series - where I pack up my backpack with my laptop, headphones, and a disposable camera and see where the day takes me.

This is a special song. 

When I woke up to make this song, I had a weird inkling to go to my first apartment in LA; my friends still live there and I thought it would be a cool thing to come say hi and make a beat on the roof.

What I didn’t realize is that one year ago - almost to the day - I moved to Los Angeles to pursue doing music full time. Making music and living here has been a dream of mine since I was a 16 year-old kid producing rap beats on my barely-functioning laptop. I’ve never really taken a moment to appreciate that, and this song felt like that moment to me. I put myself in the shoes of my teenage self and imagined what words of encouragement I could offer if I could go back in time. In writing the song I also realized that if you really love what you do, it will always be a dream.

For this song I had a hard time getting started for the day. I was lacking inspiration and spent a lot of time debating where I should go. For whatever reason I went through my old photos and found a picture from August of 2018 where I was standing at sunset at an overlook at Griffith Park. At the time I was a junior in college and I remember so vividly the overwhelming draw I had to figure out a way to move to Los Angeles one day. I put my things together and drove to that same spot.

I spent the day walking around the park and its surrounding neighborhoods and couldn’t help but experience Deja Vu. It’s almost three years later, but it felt exactly like that day in August of 2018. After recording some ambience, I hopped back in the car, plugged in the aux, and got to work.

For this song I found myself on a rooftop in North Hollywood. I spent a lot of the day thinking about the inevitability of growing up and compared it to a free fall. Growing up can be a scary thing. It’s important to control the things that we can physically control, while letting the rest happen naturally without our own intervention.

Free Fall

Welcome to the Drifter Series. Every Monday I’ll be packing up my backpack with a laptop, a pair of headphones, and a disposable camera and hitting the road to write and record a unique piece of music. Inspired by the world around me, every part of this experience is meant to take you into a day in my life - a look at how my brain processes my surroundings in a musical context. For my first piece, I went on a drive in the the Hollywood Hills. I brought a book with me and flipped to a random page and sang a line that stuck with me. This is “Not Alone/Wrightwood”.

The last song on my first ever EP. As an artist I've always wanted to put together a coherent body of work, and ending it with Benjamin Button made so much sense to me. I made this song a few months after moving to LA and it feels like a turning point in my sound for years to come. The song is about reconnecting with feelings of childhood and reminding yourself to not take yourself too seriously.
